The Ristigouche Salmon Club was formed in 1880 with one of the objectives being to promote the health and well being of its members through the pursuit of salmon fishing. Salmon fishing is the greatest of all fresh water sports, and some of the best salmon fishing in the world is found on the Restigouche River. The Restigouche River is awesome in its power to flood, and yet its waters are crystal clear and breathtakingly beautiful, even under the extreme pressures now placed on it by more modern methods of transportation, and many more people. Our Club, for over one hundred years, has taken a leading role in the many groups whose concern is the preservation of this special and very fragile ecology, which is needed to conserve and keep the Restigouche salmon healthy and the river beautiful. For over a century, we have been one of the area’s major employers, and generations of Matapedia residents, who love fishing and the River as much as we do, have served us well. We, in turn, have annually provided scholarships to the children of employees, both of RSC and other lodges along the river, to encourage them and make it financially possible for more of them to go to colleges and universities to continue their education. They have earned degrees which have varied from medicine and nursing to marine biology and engineering. The true sportsman is also a dedicated conservationist, and to quote a former Club President, “Salmon fishing keeps a man alive and stirring”. Whose blood would not be stirred when battling a large Restigouche salmon on light tackle. May we all enjoy health, long life and happiness, in good company amongst our fellow members and guests on the Restigouche, and in the pleasant atmosphere of warmth and fine service which the Club staff provides for our comfort.
